After finishing at Askham Bryan college too, in 1984 Rory set up Horsforth Pick Your Own, as well as working alongside his father David milking cows.  By 1997 the opportunity to purchase another farm in Barton-le-Street near Malton led to the end of milk production and a shift towards arable farming, with a few suckler cows remaining at Horsforth, Rory commuting between the two farms.  By 2012 the cattle all moved to the farm at Barton-le-Street, increasing in number with arable crops replaced by more grass and herb leys for them.  This also allowed the P.Y.O. at Horsforth to expand.

When Rory’s sons left University having studied agriculture and gaining experience on other farms they joined the family farm.  Joe now manages the day to day running of the P.Y.O. business in Horsforth and introduced pumpkins to the enterprise.  Will runs the Aberdeen Angus suckler herd and arable cropping at Barton-le-Street.  Both enterprises expanding over the last few years.  

To increase direct to customer sales of farm produce a small P.Y.O. was added at Barton-le-Street in 2019 along with free range bronze turkeys reared for the Christmas market and Christmas trees sold at Horsforth P.Y.O.  It was therefore a natural progression to offer home bred pasture fed beef which is hoped will prove popular.

The Kemp family farm continues to diversify as things around them change.
