OUR CATTLE

Our Cattle

All our cattle are born and raised on our family run farm.  They are Aberdeen Angus cattle a breed native to the UK, the best for grazing while slowly maturing, and renowned for their marbling and a fuller flavour, so perfect for life on our Yorkshire farm.

Home bred, pasture fed

We calve in the spring, our calves enjoying the next 6 months suckling, and grazing alongside their mums on our herb and clover rich grass leys.  In the Autumn as the fields turn wet, they come into our purpose built barns still remaining with their mothers until they are around 9months old.  They are then weaned to allow their mothers to rest before her next calve.

As winter turns to spring the cattle go out for another summer on the herb rich leys until they are 18-27months old.  We only select heifer (female) calves for Kemps beef as this is the best, solely fed on home grown crops.

If an animal requires antibiotics, under veterinary guidance, we administer them but ensure these animals are not chosen for our beef sold direct to customers. We are not organic farmers but the manure from our cattle provides natural fertiliser, and as no pesticides are used on our grassland, together this minimises artificial inputs.  The grass and clover leys with natural muck improve soil quality and are an important part of our crop rotation.

When mature the animals are taken to a registered abattoir stun slaughtered with the meat hung for a minimum of 21 days, to ensure taste and tenderness are maximised. They then go to our butcher to be cut up and packed for us to sell direct to our customers currently via our PYOs.  As a Red Tractor assured farm we can ensure traceability, along with welfare and environmental protection in all our farming practices.
